雅魯藏布峽谷北起米林縣的大渡卡村（海拔2880米），南到墨脫縣巴昔卡村（海拔115米），雅魯藏布大峽谷長504.9公里，平均深度2800米，最深處達6009米，是世界第一大峽谷。整個峽谷地區冰川、絕壁、陡坡、泥石流和巨浪滔天的大河交錯在一起，環境十分惡劣。許多地區至今仍無人涉足，堪稱“地球上最後的祕境”，是地質工作少有的空白區之一。
