蘇州，古稱吳、吳都、吳中、東吳、吳門，現簡稱蘇。蘇州自有文字記載以來的歷史已有4000多年，公元前514年建城，是中國首批24個歷史文化名城之一，中國重點風景旅遊城市，也是4個中國重點環境保護城市之一、長江三角洲重要的中心城市之一。隋開皇九年（公元589年）始定名為蘇州，以城西南的姑蘇山得名，沿稱至今。蘇州是江蘇省的經濟、對外貿易、工商業和物流中心，也是重要的文化、藝術、教育和交通中心。
